THE RANGE

The ISR range is unequaled in the industry in terms of support and practical preparation. With realistic terrain features, including varying elevations and vegetation, our environment provides a uniquely versatile, real world testing ground for unmanned vehicles and operators. The temperate Tennessee climate allows for an annual average of 300+ days of flight operations.

Range Specs & Benefits

The unique features of the ISR range make it a perfect location for unmanned testing and training:

  • 10 square miles on the ground and 32 square miles in the air
  • 2500x100 foot airfield with hangars
  • Military Operations Urban Terrain (MOUT) facility
  • Multiple launch and recovery sites (LRS)
  • Ground radar based sense and avoid system
  • Observation towers manned with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certified personnel
  • All ISR Group facilities are in close proximity to the range
  • Middle Tennessee State University teams with ISR Group to develop Certificates of Authorization for FAA approval to conduct UAS operations on our range

Operational Capability

The range has multi-platform operational capability for UGV, UAS, surrogate UAS, and unmanned-manned asset integration. It is ideally suited for Groups 1, 2 and 3 UAS and UGV platforms.

The UAS applications on our range are extensive:

  • Runway for launch and recovery of multiple UAS platforms
  • Testing and training scenarios including convoy support, counter improvised explosive device (IED), counter ambush, hub and spoke, field training exercises, mission qualification training, pattern of life studies, and static target identification
  • Payload and sensor testing activities
  • Full motion video training opportunities
  • Initial qualification training and mission qualification training

UGV applications are featured on the range as well:

  • Improved and unimproved road surfaces for a variety of deployment settings, including challenging off-road terrain
  • Ideal environment for sense and avoid, surveying, route mapping, and sensor and automotive development
  • Complete support for testing and training scenarios including convoy support, counter IED, airport security, explosive ordnance device (EOD), perimeter security, building clearing, and static target identification
